2010 George Kelty Scholarship - REVISED ENTRY DEADLINE

Local 5 is proud to offer scholarship opportunities to members in good standing and their children. In order to be eligible, an applicant must be enrolled in, or intend to enroll in, an accredited college or technical school in 2010. Scholarships will be awarded based on an essay submitted by the applicant. By applying for a scholarship, applicants agree that their essay may be published in USW newsletters or websites.

 

This year the following scholarships may be awarded:

    1 @ $2,500    1 @ $1,000    3 @ $500

 

How to Apply:

Complete the Application Form below and mail it with your essay and documentation of enrollment.

 

Compose an essay between 500 – 1000 words on the topic:

 

“Employee Free Choice Act: Do we need it?”

 

Do not put your name on the essay. Essays will be judged by an independent panel selected by the Trustees. The Application Form, documentation and essay must be postmarked no later than June 30, 2010, and mailed to:

Scholarship winners will be announced at the August 3, 2010 membership meeting. Applicants will be notified in writing of the decision of the Trustees. The decision of the Trustees will be final. Scholarships will be distributed to the school on behalf of the recipient.

President Obama proclaimed April 28, 2010 as Workers Memorial Day. Obama is the first president to issue a proclamation for Workers Memorial Day. This is a strong signal that his administration recognizes the importance of worker health and safety.

Workers' Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember those who have died and suffered injuries and illnesses because of their work, and to dedicate ourselves to the ongoing fight for workers' rights.

Worksafe is hosting a Workers’ Memorial Day event on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 in Oakland. Please join us for a light lunch and a brief program.

USW Criticizes Oil Industry’s Approach to Health and Safety

The United Steelworkers (USW) today condemned remarks made by oil industry trade associations in the aftermath of the Tesoro refinery explosion and fire April 2 in Anacortes, Wash., that killed five and severely injured two others.

The United Steelworkers (USW) union expresses its deep sympathy to the families and co-workers of the employees killed and severely injured in the explosion and fire that occurred at approximately 12:30 a.m. on April 2 at the Tesoro refinery in Anacortes, Washington.

2009 George Kelty Scholarship Winners

Each year, Local 5 offers scholarships to members in good standing and their children. Scholarships are awarded based on an essay submitted by the applicant. In order to be eligible, an applicant must be enrolled in, or intend to enroll in, an accredited college or technical school in 2009.

This year eight scholarships of $525 each may be awarded. The scholarship will be distributed to the school on behalf of the recipient.

USW Local 5 will be holding a Union Steward Training class.  The class will be scheduled as soon as we have enough participants signed up.  Please respond to jclark@usw5.org if you are interested in attending this class.  You do not need to be a Steward in order to attend.  Please feel free to attend if your are interested in learning more about your rights as a Union member.  Please include your name and e-mail address in your response in case we need to contact you with updates.  Class size will be limited so please sign up early.
